How Shockwave Therapy Supports Real Healing
Living with persistent pain can impact every aspect of your life. Going for a walk, getting a good night’s sleep, spending time with family–all can feel like they’re just out of reach.
It’s even more frustrating when your pain doesn’t respond to standard treatment. Many people assume that the only way to manage their long-term pain is through medical injections, which really only mask the symptoms, or surgery, which can be risky and expensive.
However, at Achieve Therapy and Fitness, we offer a potential alternative: shockwave therapy. This non-invasive treatment can help you recover from stubborn injuries more efficiently, especially when combined with a comprehensive physical therapy program.

A Closer Look at Shockwave Therapy
Let’s get one thing out of the way first: The “shock” in “shockwave” doesn’t refer to electric shocks! A shockwave is actually a type of acoustic sound wave. When delivered through the skin using a handheld device, they can help stimulate healing in damaged tissues.
We typically recommend shockwave therapy when your pain lingers or hasn’t responded to usual care. Conditions that respond well to it include:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Chronic tendon pain, like Achilles or tennis elbow
- Calcific shoulder pain
- Chronic muscle tightness

How Shockwave Therapy Supports Healing
Chronic injuries often stall because the body’s healing response slows down. Shockwave therapy helps restart that process in a couple of different ways:
Increases Blood Flow
Improves circulation to injured tissue, helping to deliver oxygen and nutrients needed for repair
Stimulates Cellular Activity
Encourages tissue regeneration and activates cells responsible for healing
Breaks Down Scar Tissue and Calcifications
Helps reduce stiffness and restriction in the tissue to improve overall mobility
Reduces Pain Signals
Alters how pain is transmitted to the brain, helping to provide both long- and short-term relief
Why Shockwave Therapy Is an Effective Alternative to Injections or Surgery
It’s true that there are some cases where surgery or medical injections are the best option for managing pain. However, because shockwave therapy is effective at treating stubborn injuries, it’s worth giving it a try before more invasive options.
The Problem with Injections
Corticosteroid injections may reduce pain quickly, but the effects are often temporary. Over time, repeated injections can weaken tendons and soft tissues, potentially increasing the risk of further injury.
Shockwave therapy takes a different approach. By stimulating the body’s natural healing response, it helps injured tissue repair itself instead of masking the problem.
The Problem With Surgery
Surgery comes with downtime, higher costs, and potential complications. Recovery can take weeks or months, depending on the procedure and the area involved. In some cases, these drawbacks are worth the benefits.
However, early intervention with shockwave therapy can help you delay (or even avoid) the need for surgery. Even better: most people can continue their normal activities while progressing through treatment.
How Shockwave Therapy Fits Into Physical Therapy
Shockwave therapy works best when used as part of a comprehensive plan tailored to your goals and lifestyle. We typically combine shockwave therapy with other treatment techniques, including:
- Hands-on manual therapy techniques to improve joint and tissue mobility
- Targeted exercise programs to strengthen the muscles that support the injured area
- Movement retraining to correct patterns and habits that may be contributing to your pain
- Personalized education and activity guidance to help you stay active while protecting healing tissue
This comprehensive approach helps address the source of the problem rather than simply masking symptoms. It also improves long-term outcomes and reduces the risk of recurrence.

Is Shockwave Therapy Right for You?
You may be a good candidate if:
- Your pain has lasted several weeks or months
- You have tried rest, stretching, or basic care without success
- You want to avoid injections or surgery
- You are looking to stay active during recovery
Every case is different, and one of our physical therapists can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether shockwave therapy would be a good addition to your care plan.
If you’re dealing with persistent pain, the Achieve Therapy and Fitness team is here to help you move forward with a plan tailored to you. Request an appointment today to find out if shockwave therapy can help you get back to the activities you enjoy!
