How Our Cash-Based Shockwave Therapy Services Can Benefit You
At Achieve Therapy, we want to help you take control of your health and well-being, and one way we facilitate that is by offering cash-based specialty services. Health insurance doesn’t cover these services, but they offer unique benefits to help you hit your recovery or performance goals.
Today, we want to focus on a particular service: shockwave therapy, a unique approach to managing pain and inflammation. It’s particularly effective if you’re struggling with long-term pain that hasn’t responded to more traditional treatments.
Because we offer shockwave therapy as a cash-based service, you aren’t bound by the limitations of your insurance provider. You have the freedom to select the treatments that will most benefit you, which can be life-changing if you’ve been living with chronic pain.

Scary Name, Excellent Results: Explaining Shockwave Therapy
We know that shockwave therapy has an intimidating name. The full term for the treatment, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, is even worse! But there’s nothing to fear from this technique, which uses sound waves to reduce pain, promote blood circulation, and facilitate your body’s natural healing processes.
We deliver these sound waves by running a specialized device over the skin of the affected area (hence, “extracorporeal,” or outside the body). The shockwaves interact with your damaged tissue in a couple of different ways:
- It reduces inflammation in the tissue, which helps with pain relief.
- It increases blood circulation to the area, helping to create a better environment for healing and recovery.
- It stimulates collagen production, helping to strengthen and restore the function of tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues.
What Conditions Benefit from Shockwave Therapy?
- Tendoninopathies: Your tendons connect your muscles to your bones. Overuse and awkward positioning can irritate them, leading to pain and restricted mobility. Examples include tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis, or patellar tendinitis (which affects the knee).
- Plantar Fasciitis: Your plantar fascia is a tissue band stretching along the bottom of your foot. If it’s damaged, you’ll experience sharp, stabbing pain in your heel.
- Myofascial Pain Syndrome: This chronic pain condition causes restriction through your myofascia, a web of flexible tissue that wraps around your muscles. This restriction leads to pain and limited range of motion.
- Knee Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage in your joints deteriorates, causing pain and inflammation when the bones rub together.

What To Expect During Your Appointments
Your first session at Achieve Therapy will include an in-depth physical examination that helps our team better understand your needs. We’ll take a complete health history, discuss your symptoms, and run several simple movement screens. This information allows us to create a customized treatment plan. At this stage, we can let you know if shockwave therapy will benefit you. If so, we may incorporate it alongside more traditional physical therapy treatments, such as therapeutic exercise.
Shockwave therapy itself is a relatively simple procedure. Each session typically lasts between 15-30 minutes. We’ll assess the area, apply gel to help transmit the shockwaves, and then run a handheld wand over the skin. You may experience mild discomfort or tingling, but we can adjust the intensity to meet your needs. Afterward, we’ll provide aftercare instructions, such as avoiding strenuous exercise. However, most patients can immediately return to routine activities.

Five Tips to Stay Safe on the Pickleball Court
As the weather warms up, it’s time for one of our favorite social sports: pickleball! This outdoor racquet sport is fun, fast, and easy to learn, but its quick movement and repetitive swinging motions can increase your risk of overuse injuries. Here are five tips to keep yourself safe all season long.

- Strengthen Key Muscles: A strong body ensures you can handle the demands of the game. Focus on:
- Core exercises to improve balance and stability
- Lower body strengthening to help you move across the court without falling
- Shoulder and wrist exercises to support repeated swings
- Improve Mobility: A restricted range of motion can limit your movements and set you up for injuries. Try:
- Shoulder stretches to accommodate repetitive overhead motions
- Wrist stretches to reduce strain from gripping the paddle
- Use Proper Technique: Pickleball is a beginner-friendly sport, but improper form can still cause overuse injuries. Spend some time perfecting:
- A stable stance to avoid sudden, awkward movements
- Controlled swings to reduce stress on your joints
- Warm Up Before You Play: Jumping into a game with cold muscles makes you more prone to strain. Take 10 minutes to warm up beforehand with:
- A brisk walk around the courts
- Dynamic stretches like arm circles, leg swings, or lunges
- Don’t Ignore Your Equipment: Pickleball is designed to be easy to pick up and play, but you still want to use the right equipment. Make sure to find:
- Well-fitting shoes that support your ankles and prevent slipping
- A paddle that matches your grip strength and playing style to reduce wrist strain
Remember, playing pickleball should be fun, not painful. If you notice any persistent pain during or after your matches, schedule an appointment at Achieve Therapy. We’ll help you figure out what’s going on–and what you can do about it!
